With the speed that we are losing the natural resources deep inside earth, it is imperative that we slow down our usage of such non-renewable resources and start using resources which are produced constantly. A few examples of renewable resources that we need to concentrate on are solar power, sea water, which occupies two-thirds of the area of earth and air.

Green houses have become a necessity as well as a fashion. It has become very fashionable to promote such houses and even to stay in one. If you are looking for certifies green houses, these are in fact more expensive than normal houses. But if you think you can spot the features of a house you intend to buy or rent in, and decide if it is anywhere near the green capability, then there are a few ways if determining that. Any support that this cause gets is worth it as any savings in usage of energy, however small that may be, can help a lot of people across the world to live in better conditions.

How do you know if a house is actually green? As you look at the house, always make sure that you have two important points in your agenda. Does the house help you save energy bills? Does this house add any polluting elements to the nature?

The answer to the first lies in the way the house is constructed. A good ventilation system, ensuring cross ventilation and good insulation to walls and windows make sure your electricity bills are reduced. Also, usage of power generated out of solar energy or wind energy can have a bigger impact on the energy saving initiative. Some communities have in built power systems that take care of common area lighting and such common services by way of either solar or wind powered energy. Choosing your house in such communities is your way of supporting the cause. Rain water harvesting is another way by which you are reducing usage of potable water available in the earth as well as energy to pump it into the reservoir tanks. Good harvesting techniques can ensure that the rain water is better utilized and does not flow unused into the drains.

The second point is that which relates to pollution. Usage of bio-degradable materials in construction is a good point to ponder. Organic paints, pesticides and such materials can make a lot of difference to the pollution and reduce carbon emissions, which in turn reduces ozone layer depletion, thereby making sure the universe is not harmed due to UV radiation.

The greenery around the home can also be increased to ensure a good supply of clean oxygen.
